The Ipoh Railway Station is the centrepiece of the state's colonial heart. Surrounded by several historical landmarks such as the Ipoh High Court, Ipoh Town Hall and Ipoh Post Office, the station is often called the Taj Mahal of Ipoh by locals.
The first Ipoh Station was built in 1894 and consisted of a single-storey wooden structure. Its late-Edwardian Baroque style was adopted into the design in 1917 by Arthur Benison Hubback. The suare in front of the station is now known as the Ipoh Heritage Square, which preserves some of the elements of its past including a cenotaph, memorial plaque and Ipoh tree. It is also the start of the Ipoh heritage trail.
